Heat Up Your Labor Day Dessert With Grilled Plums

With summer fruits so plentiful at this time of year, it’s almost wrong not to serve fresh fruit when you fire up your grill this weekend. Try this delicious, easy recipe for grilled plums (and substitute any other ripe stone fruit, or even pineapple and watermelon) and serve it with pareve whipped cream, ice cream, lemon sorbet or if you’re serving dairy, with mascarpone cheese mixed with a little honey. Sprinkle with chopped almonds, pistachios, graham cracker crumbs, or even granola. It’s a nice break from a heavier dessert like cake. If you don’t use margarine, brush any light-tasting oil such as Canola.

If you would like to go savory and serve this as a side dish to your meal, sprinkle balsamic vinegar along with the oil or margarine and skip all the sugar. Brush on a little more vinegar and oil and salt and pepper after taking off the grill. You can flavor these side dishes with fresh herbs like thyme or parsley.

Ingredients:

Procedure:

In a bowl, toss plums in melted butter to coat. Sprinkle with brown sugar. On a grill over medium-high heat, cook plums until lightly charred, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Divide plums and ice cream among 6 bowls and serve.
