Hebrew Institute of Riverdale Celebrates Israel’s 74th Birthday

Israel’s 74th birthday was celebrated on May 5 at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, open to the entire Riverdale community. Musical Director Jonathan Dzik directed the choir at this first unmasked outdoor celebration since COVID-19 began.

Several hundred people enjoyed a delicious dinner, provided and donated by longtime HIR members Martin and Smadar Taub. Children enjoyed face painting, balloons, clowns and playground activities.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson spoke at length to those present, praising the HIR synagogue members and the synagogue’s extensive programs, and presented a “Citation of Merit in recognition of The Bayit’s continuing commitment to The Bronx” to The Bayit’s Senior Rabbi Steven Exler. Earlier, Bronx Borough District Attorney Darcel Denise Clark, the first woman to hold that office and the first woman of color to serve as a district attorney in the history of New York State, addressed those at the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration.

New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and New York City Councilman Eric Dinowitz spoke of their commitment and efforts to support Israel, combat antisemitism and build bridges of understanding between communities.

The program was sponsored by the Riverdale Jewish Community Partnership and coordinated by the Riverdale Y.
