(Courtesy of BCHA) Rabbi Elchanan Poupko, a popular Jewish writer, teacher, speaker and blogger, and Rabbi Ari Perl, a vice president at LiveOnNY, will highlight an exciting March learning program in Stamford, Connecticut. The programs, which are being sponsored by the Center for Community Education (CCE) at the Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy of Connecticut, will be broadcast via Zoom to the larger Jewish community.
On Tuesday night, March 15th at 8 p.m., Rabbi Poupko will deliver a fascinating presentation on “The Archaeology and Historic Background of the Book of Esther.”
Rabbi Poupko is an eleventh-generation rabbi as well as a faculty member at Rabbi Arthur Schneier Park East Day School. He holds a Master’s degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University. He is also the president of EITAN-The American-Israeli Jewish Network. He has written ‘Sacred Days on the Jewish Holidays,” “Poupko on the Parsha,” and hundreds of articles published in five languages. He is a member of the executive committee of the Rabbinical Council of America. He lives in Stamford with his wife and family.
On consecutive Wednesday nights, March 23 and 30, Rabbi Perl will deliver a two-part presentation on “Torah, Science & Modern Medicine: Theory & Practice.” Part 1 (Theory) will explore how to reconcile Torah with scientific discovery, using the theory of evolution, dating of the universe, and the text of Bereishit as a case study. Part 2 (Practice) will explore how the halachic system grapples with developments in modern medicine, using brain death and organ donation as a case study.
Rabbi Ari Perl is the vice president for Multicultural Education at LiveOnNY, the federally certified non-profit organization that oversees and facilitates all aspects of deceased organ donation in the greater-NYC area. During his distinguished 20 year career in the rabbinate prior to joining LiveOnNY, Rabbi Perl also served in numerous community leadership positions, including president of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Dallas, UJA/Federation board member, and vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America, where he currently serves on the executive committee. A dynamic & engaging adult educator, Rabbi Perl lectures widely on the interface of science and halacha, as well as Jewish end-of-life ethics.
“We are delighted to feature two outstanding Jewish educators as they deliver high quality shiurim to our Stamford community members, and the extended Jewish community at large,” said Michael Feldstein, co-chair of the CCE. “This is a wonderful opportunity to hear two very talented teachers deliver shiurim on two very interesting subjects.”
The Center for Community Education (CCE) is a new initiative of the Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy of Connecticut that aims to inspire thoughtful conversation related to the spectrum of Jewish issues and ideals. In the past, the group has sponsored a dialogue with Rabbi Yitz Greenberg and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin that attracted close to 300 registrants, and also organized a program on race and the Jewish community. Last year the organization published the inaugural issue of Panim, a journal of Jewish thought, and plans to publish the second issue in September.
