Interdisciplinary Lessons Connect JKHA Students to MLK Jr. Day

In JKHA, middle school Judaic Studies classes participated in an interdisciplinary lesson comparing the words of Martin Luther King Jr. and statements of Tanach and Chazal. They discussed similarities and differences, and focused on how the quotes inspire them, and what lessons and values they learned that they will try to incorporate into their own lives. Lower school students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he had on our country. They read passages and essays that provided for age-appropriate discussions. They focused on using words for action and having a growth mindset to be determined and not give up when you want to affect change. As part of the first and second grade values curriculum students read one of his many famous inspiring quotes, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” They talked about what the quote meant and then shared and wrote different examples of how they can solve problems peacefully at school and at home. Afterwards they decorated a heart with their fingerprints in different colors to see all their differences together.
