On Thursday, January 6, Israel’s Health Ministry announced it wouild be scrapping its “red list” of destinations with high COVID infection rates. The decision applies to Israeli citizens and residents, as well as foreign tourists, who are either vaccinated or fully recovered. This announcement now permits travel to and from the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, and several other destinations.

According to the Health Ministry, all vaccinated or recovered travelers from these countries must quarantine for 24 hours upon arrival in Israel, or until they receive a negative test result. Unvaccinated arrivals must receive two negative tests: one upon arrival, and one after seven days of quarantine. High-risk groups must receive a negative PCR result to exit quarantine, while the rest of the population need only take a rapid antigen test.
“On behalf of olim, their families, and people all around the world I thank the Israeli government for this important step,” said NGO Yad L’Olim founder Dov Lipman.“We still have more work to do, including making sure that emergency travel is still possible for the unvaccinated, finding ways to allow those who have antibodies from recovery to enter, and to plan for a better plan if there are variants in the future.”
