Mrs. Neuhof’s third graders are diving into a fabulous research unit! JEC third graders are working in small groups to learn more about topics such as electric fields, beehives, and hurricanes. Their reading groups include texts at different levels, and the children apply comprehension strategies such as listing what they already know and questions that they have, and using text features such as diagrams. As they come across new vocabulary, they look up the definition and are challenged to put the vocabulary word in a sentence. Online research comes into play as well to supplement the information obtained from the non-fiction texts. The JEC’s newly minted experts are finalizing their presentations and preparing to teach their peers all about what they’ve learned.
