JEC Visits Vietnam Memorial and Museum

“They are living history,” remarked one 11th grade student, after visiting the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial and Museum this week with his English class. The students had the rare opportunity to spend two hours with Vietnam veterans who were the tour guides during the class trip to the museum and memorial. One of the most poignant moments was when one of the veterans, Alan Rothman, shared how difficult it was for him to get from the jungles of Vietnam to the city of Saigon in order to go to davening for Yom Kippur during the war. He was given a siddur that day in Saigon, which he carried every day thereafter in Vietnam. The students experienced how meaningful it was to him as he showed them the siddur he received over 50 years ago.
