(Courtesy of JFS Clifton) As people age, the responsibility of caregiving often falls upon adult children, sometimes unexpectedly and without preparation. When this time comes, numerous questions arise for the children who now must address the needs of their parents. Should you care for your elderly parents in their own home? Is moving them to your home a better option? What about investing in a retirement community or assisted living facility? How can you effectively advocate for your parents when something seems amiss with their healthcare plan?
Specifically, in the Jewish community, there is a significant emphasis on the mitzvah of kibud av v’em – honoring one’s father and mother. This fundamental mitzvah, which appears in the Ten Commandments, is uniquely beautiful, honorable and challenging all at once. Many family caregivers who observe the mitzvah report positive experiences, such as the satisfaction of giving back to someone who cared for them, an increased sense of meaning and purpose in life, and serving as a role model for their own children in the hope they will reciprocate when needed. However, navigating the questions and complexities that come with this task (both pragmatic and emotional) can be quite challenging.
In an effort to support our community seniors and caregivers, JFS Clifton-Passaic recently launched a webinar series entitled Golden Resources. JFS Golden Resources is a free monthly group for seniors and their caregivers to learn from experts about the many complex topics and situations that arise with aging and caregiving. We host professional speakers during evening hours on Zoom to ensure accessibility for everyone interested in educating themselves on various important topics and resources.
We invite you to join us on Monday, December 4 at 8 p.m. for our next caregiver webinar featuring guest speaker Miriam Benoff, NP. Miriam has years of experience, currently at an outpatient office of Holy Name Medical Center in Paramus, and she is known for her expertise and warmth. She will cover topics such as managing chronic conditions later in life, tips and strategies for healthy aging, and effective advocacy for elderly parents within the healthcare system. The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session for those with questions or concerns.
