If you step into a first grade classroom at the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy, it would not be unusual to find the students writing their names in Chinese. The students have been learning about China, with highlights of the curriculum including comparing children’s lives in China with their own in America, learning about and “visiting” the Great Wall, locating China on the map, discovering things invented by the Chinese, celebrating the Chinese New Year and comparing it to Rosh Hashana, and more. The students have been enjoying hands-on activities like crafting Zen gardens, making dragons, and painting lanterns for a lantern festival they will be having.
