Jobseekers: Take Advantage of the Holidays!

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, the holiday season is officially upon us. Regardless of religion, most people will be celebrating a festive holiday this month and will be attending holiday parties. There is cheer in the air—so let’s take advantage of this time when people are considering doing more good.

Many candidates in a job search incorrectly believe that nothing happens in the job market during the holiday season since hiring managers are away on vacation during part of the month. This misguided belief causes candidates to take the focus off their job search and point it toward enjoying the holidays. In reality, companies are working hard to fill open requisitions and to identify a talented candidate prior to the new year. Managers are eager to get someone in place so the new hire can transition into the new organization and be effective sooner.

The best approach to this season is to re-engage your network. Review the people you have spoken to over the past six months or year and have helped you out—with a phone number, a LinkedIn introduction or even an interview. Regardless if the connection led to an offer—the person who helped you went out of their way to do so and it is appropriate to thank them. In situations where the position has not been filled, it will allow the hiring manager to consider you once again by having your name float by their desk.

Reach out to your network and say thanks—craft a meaningful note—a handwritten note or a holiday card during this time will be well received. The professionalism that will continue to be associated with your name will go a long way. It may not change a company’s decision in hiring you for that specific position, but it will plant a seed that could pay off at a later date.
