Judge Ruchie Freier Visits Congregation Rinat Yisrael

Cong. Rinat Yisrael will be hosting Judge Rachel Freier who will speak on “My Journey to the Bench” at 4 p.m. on Shabbat, Dec. 15.

Judge Freier, whose career was highlighted in the recent acclaimed film “93 Queen”, campaigned and was elected as a Civil Court judge for the Kings County 5th judicial district in New York State, thereby becoming the first chasidic Jewish woman to be elected as a civil court judge in New York State and the first chasidic woman to hold public office in United States history. After her election she was assigned to serve on the Criminal Court in the Kings County 5th judicial district.

A long time activist for Jewish causes, Judge Freier became involved with and helped establish an all-female Orthodox Jewish volunteer EMT ambulance service whose goal is to preserve women’s modesty in emergency medical situations, especially childbirth. The group was formed after its request to add a female corps of EMT volunteers to the all-male Hatzalah organization, the long-standing Orthodox Jewish EMT service in New York City, was rejected and vocally opposed. Undaunted, she and her group of chasidic women persevered and established the female Ezras Nashim organization which is fully operational at the present time.

The entire community is invited to hear a courageous heroine of our times.
