Jacob Geffner wasn’t looking for a new opportunity; he was busy with his very successful restaurant, Poppys Bagels Pizza and TCBY in Teaneck, serving up fresh pizza and sandwiches. But when Mrs. Fields reached out to him, asking if was interested in opening a franchise at American Dream, he was intrigued. “I have a long relationship with the company and it’s a national, worldwide, well-known brand with a good following and very strong products,” he said. “I was interested.” He did his homework and said “yes.” The negotiations were on track when COVID hit. After a delay, Mrs. Fields opened last month.
Visit Mrs. Fields for dozens of cookie varieties, brownies and made-to-order cookie birthday cakes. A box of samples I brought back to the Link office turned a busy workday into a party; the smiles were everywhere. Mrs. Fields signature chocolate chip cookie was loved by all. Some of us indulged our inner chocoholic with a triple chocolate cookie filled with pillowy marshmallow chunks. Of course the cinnamon cookies were delicious and the sprinkle cookies made us feel like we were celebrating a birthday.
Speaking of celebrations, I watched a birthday cake being made. The large, round cookie cake comes out of the oven and the edges are patted down to make room for the rosettes. Chrissy Carter, who was on duty that day, patiently decorated a soccer-themed cake, using a model on a sheet of multiple designs. Carter said she knew about Mrs Fields from her mother, a big fan, so she was quick to apply for a position when the bakery opened. I admired her skill as she added the outer border design and the inner soccer elements. It looked almost too good to eat, but I’m sure the birthday child and friends devoured it quickly.
Cookies and cakes are baked fresh daily. The batter, which is made with a proprietary recipe, comes from the OU-supervised main facility. Gaffner said he had to make just a few substitutes in the decorative add-ons and smoothie ingredients to make the products kosher. At the mall, Mrs. Fields is in an area near tables and chairs, so you can take a break from shopping or attractions and relax with your treats. You can also order online for pick-up or delivery.
