(Courtesy of Lema’an Achai) This past Sunday evening, Miriam and Tsachi Treuhaft hosted a beautiful barbecue benefitting Israel’s premier chesed organization, Lema’an Achai. While the food was delicious and plentiful, the focus of the evening was to get into the High Holiday season spirit by contemplating how in 5784 we can “do” the mitzvah of tzedaka even better. As Executive Director Rabbi Avrohom Leventhal explained, ‘Lema’an Achai’s Smart Chesed methodology helps people in crisis, and is based on Rambam’s highest level of Tzedaka, which enables people to help themselves reach emotional and financial independence.” To further bring the point home, a prominent New York rabbi recently encouraged people to view supporting Lema’an Achai as a tzedaka investment, not a tzedaka expense. Rabbi Shaul Robinson, senior rabbi at Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City, wowed the crowd with his powerful insights of the deeper meaning of the shofar.
