Dear Shayna,

Every day, I sit by myself at lunch. I wish other kids would join me or ask me to join them, but they don’t. I feel bad about this. What can I do to fix this uncomfortable situation?

Sincerely,

Bored Benny

Dear Bored Benny,

What I would do if I were you is pretend that this situation is a story you’re in. The problem is set and now you need a hook to grab people’s interest. Pick something that you enjoy so that you will attract others who share in your same interests.

For example, if you like reading comic books, bring a bunch of comic books to lunch so other kids who like comic books also will want to join your table.

Maybe your food smells bad, try to bring food that is less stinky.

Remember, never pretend to be someone you’re not. I know from experience that can get you into a heap of trouble. Be yourself and others will eventually gravitate towards you to share in your similar interests. You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable with people you don’t know because if you’re comfortable they’ll also feel comfortable. Sooner or later those kids you don’t know will be your friends. So remember, be cool, be kind, be careful & be crazy!

Best of luck

Shayna B.
