The fifth grade at Manhattan Day School celebrated Children’s Book Week by running an inaugural May Madness Children’s Choice Award competition. The students of 5G selected their eight favorite read alouds from a field of five dozen books released in 2021, “Wolfboy,” “Maybe,” “The Rock from the Sky,” “Everybody in the Red Brick House,” “Mel Fell,” “Negative Cat,” “Let Me Fix You a Plate” and “We Became Jaguars.” Students from 5G and 5B then set up brackets, pairing books and read all eight selections to all classes from grades one through six and then conducted votes. Once the choices were down to the Final Four, students voted on a title as the 2022 MDS Children’s Choice Award winner. The fifth grade students enjoyed their visits and sharing these favorite stories. “I loved seeing the kids’ reactions, making voices and doing this with friends,” commented Diana Beroukhim (5G). And the winner is “Maybe” by Chris Haughton!
