MDS Hosts ‘The Light Of Shabbat’ Event

Last week, MDS hosted an extraordinary event—The Light of Shabbat—a celebration that brought together students, families, faculty and the essence of Shabbat in a vibrant and educational way.

In recent weeks, students in grades five-eight have been actively engaged in learning about a specific melacha related to the Mishkan, and created projects to showcase their understanding of their topics. Projects were displayed at the 39 Melachot Fair.

In preparation for this event, students had the opportunity to connect deeply with the process of bread-making, thanks to a special collaboration with Grow Torah in MDS’ rooftop garden. On Wednesday, students worked with Farmer Sara Dina from Grow Torah to learn about the steps involved in making flour and bread—a staple of the Shabbat table. Students explored the ancient processes of harvesting grain, separating the chaff and grinding the wheat into flour. This hands-on experience not only brought to life the weekly mitzvah of preparing bread but also connected the students to the agricultural roots of Jewish tradition.

Excitement buzzed in the lunchroom as students began preparing their cholents. Students chopped vegetables, seasoned their beans and meat and set up their slow-cooking masterpieces in anticipation of Thursday’s grand competition.

By Thursday, the atmosphere was filled with excitement. Over 90 families gathered at school to witness the culmination of the week’s efforts. The evening kicked off with an uplifting concert by renowned Jewish musician Eitan Katz. The air was thick with the aroma of the students’ chulents as students, parents and faculty taste tested the cholents while taking in the 39 Melachot Fair prepared by the students. This event was a true celebration of Jewish values—bringing together tradition, education and community in a meaningful way.
