As the MGBL Boys season tips off this coming weekend, MGBL is thrilled to announce that registration is open for the ever popular boys high school league and year two of the men’s league. High School registration is open at www.mgbl.org and to register for the men’s league, email [email protected].
For the past eight years the Mitch Gross Basketball League has become a vehicle to perpetuate the legacy of Mitch Gross A”H. The league focuses on teaching basketball fundamentals to players at all levels and the value of working together as a team. The league is an enthusiastic and affordable program open to residents of Bergen and Passaic counties in New Jersey, as well as Manhattan, Riverdale and Rockland county, New York.
The high school league is a continuation of MGBL for most of the boys (many have played MGBL since its inception). The league will assign each player to a team to achieve a competitive balance.
Like MGBL boys and girls, the men’s league will have rosters, jerseys, certified officials and be played in local school gyms. Unlike the kid’s leagues, the men’s league will once again be a bring your own team league. The squad can be a bunch of guys from shul, work, one’s children’s school, college buddies, or even perfect strangers. It is expected that the season will be comprised of eight regular season games, not including playoffs.
New for season two, there will be two divisions, under thirty and over thirty. Players in the over thirty division will have the option of playing down, but no player under thirty will be allowed to play up. All players must be post college and a member of a synagogue/temple.
Each team will be assessed a team fee of $1,800. This fee will entitle the team to ten jerseys and roster spots (players without jerseys or not officially on the roster will not be allowed to play), eight regular season games, a team name (corporate sponsors can offset the cost) and the ability to compete for bragging rights as the new champions of the MGBL men’s league.
Both seasons will start after Purim (earlier than in the past), and like all other MGBL leagues, after general expenses, all profits from the league will be donated to local charitable organizations in memory of Mitch Gross A’H.
