JResponder Gives Older Adults Peace of Mind

Every adult child who has a parent living alone worries. What if something happens and they can’t get to the phone?

Moshe Suissa came up with a solution to this problem. He developed JResponder, an easy to use cellular-based pendant with just one button to push for help—no need for a cumbersome base system. Calls are directed to Hatzalah, 911 or the phone numbers you supply. One model has fall detection, and there’s an emergency protocol in place for home visits when the person with the device doesn’t answer when called.

Suissa is a person who makes things happen. He knew what had to be done to fix the flaws he saw in other medical monitoring systems. He started in 2016, looking for the right 4G device that he could fine-tune and customize to his specifications. His most important criteria were making the device work both inside and outside the home, and work in conjunction with Hatzalah. The devices are connected to three call centers, each with about 30 people who can respond 24/7. All are trained and can access the person’s list of people to call, along with any pertinent medical information. “Our call centers are smaller and there’s a more custom experience for the user,” Suissa explained. “We know our customers on a name basis.”

This is Suissa’s second product. His first solved a problem many parents of young children will recognize: how to know when the carpool or school bus will arrive. Suissa got the idea for a tracking system when he carpooled to kollel with a group of guys. First, he created a system to track school buses, then he moved on to letting parents know when the bus would arrive. “I knew how to research and develop a product, and fine-tune an existing product,” he said. Next, he put those skills to work for JResponder.

Feedback tells Suissa that JResponder is making a big difference in people’s lives. “I’ve had customers who have told a parent that they either get this product or they go to assisted living. This is the right balance. The user is vulnerable but doesn’t want to lose independence. This lets him or her keep it.” One customer who bought a device for her mother now wants one for herself. When asked if anyone has requested to stop service, Suissa quipped, “I got a call from one customer’s son who said she got married and is moving to Israel.”
