More than 100 Jewish Groups in Climate Change March

More than 100 Jewish groups from across the spectrum, religiously and politically, marched with hundreds of thousands of people through the streets of Manhattan in the Climate Change March to let governments know they want better regulation of conditions that have drastically altered the Earth’s climate. Teaneck resident, Rabbi Lawrence Troster, Rabbinic Scholar-in-Residence of GreenFaith, the interfaith environmental coalition in New Jersey, said, “I do not expect that this march will in itself change anything, any more than previous popular demonstrations have. This march was meant to be a message to the world leaders meeting this week in the UN. That meeting is meant to prepare the way for a world climate treaty sometime next year. The last international climate treaty lapsed two years ago. And it didn’t ask for nearly enough action. Meaningful progress at the upcoming conference is doubtful. Those in power measure success by their own accumulation of power and its transmission through money. The technocrats who operate the system don’t look past this quarter or their next bonus. We need to make decisions that are far-sighted, and meant to be best for most and least harmful to any.”– Teaneck resident Rabbi.
