Moriah Fifth Graders Learn About Solar Power

Matthew Herenstein, husband of Moriah fifth grade teacher Sharon Herenstein, came in to teach the fifth graders a lesson about solar power. He explained the need to reduce fossil fuels and how the sun can provide energy to power our homes and businesses. He showed the class videos to demonstrate the operation of a solar power system and initiated a project for the students to build their own solar powered ovens out of a shoebox and aluminum foil. Herenstein also tied the solar power lesson to the class’ natural disaster unit by explaining that in the event of an extended power outage, often, solar power is the only reliable source of power available to some homes and businesses. The kids enjoyed the lesson and participated enthusiastically raising thoughtful questions and responses.
