Moriah Middle School Focuses on Bechira Chofshit

To mark Election Day, and the power of choice, Moriah middle school students took part in a two-part program centered around bechira chofshit, free will, organized by Rabbi Lipstein and Rabbi Levinson. Students first took part in a discussion and presentation about the concept of free will and why Hashem deemed such a concept necessary. Through various Torah sources, as well as movie clips that connect to the concept of free will and how our choices shape who we are and who we become, students were fully immersed in the importance of what it means to choose.

Following this engaging and meaningful discussion, students had the opportunity to exercise their free will in a light-hearted and enjoyable fashion as they played “Let’s Make A Deal!” Contestants were chosen via Kahoot trivia questions centered around Moriah, pop-culture and more. Once selected, contestants had the opportunity to choose the mystery prize of their choice, which varied in quality and type, per the game guidelines. Whether Chickie’s for the contestant and a friend, or a grade-wide Erev Shabbos tish, students had to decide whether to keep their prize or trade it in for other items such as a $20 bill or brand-new knitted bluetooth winter hat. Throughout the game, students were able to visit the ice cream sundae bar to exercise the simpler choices in life such as choosing their own ice cream flavor and toppings. Students enjoyed the sweetness of the ice cream and this special program, especially during Chodesh Cheshvan, a month not known for its sweetness or programming! May the sweetness carry them to the opening days of Kislev and yemei Chanukah.
