Moriah Middle School Has Science Fair

This week Moriah’s seventh graders participated in the sixth annual Moriah Middle School Science Fair. The three month project focused on skills such as teamwork, time management and real world science application. Students were challenged to answer a question by using the scientific method. The questions selected by student groups were diverse, ranging from, “What is the effect of whether or not music is played on how fast a guinea pig will go through a maze?” to “Does the color of a drink affect a person’s willingness to drink it?” After developing a question to investigate, student groups developed a hypothesis and carried out their experimental procedures. Following the gathering and organizing of their data, students did some research, analyzed their results and graphed their data using Google Sheets.

The final step in the process challenged students to effectively communicate the results of their experiment by creating a display board and by speaking about their experiment to family, friends and classmates. It was a great opportunity to see the students’ creative sides. With projects involving electricity, food, football, memory and more the seventh graders of Moriah were able to showcase and improve on their lab report writing skills. They presented and demonstrated their findings to family and friends at the Science Fair and had a chance to answer questions from each other’s projects in a scavenger hunt. Students will continue to present their projects in the classroom. Top scorers from the Science Fair will go on to compete in the Inter-Yeshiva Science Congress.
