Moriah ‘Shir Chadash’ Students Shine at Carnegie Hall

The 4th and 5th grade members of Shir Chadash Choir, led by Morah Sharon Kinstlinger, joined with 250 students from area schools to perform two Yiddish songs with for the finale of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene 100th Season Gala at Carnegie Hall. The students experienced the thrill of on-stage performance with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. Perlman graciously turned to the children after the dress rehearsal and complimented them on their melodious singing, conveying that he would be content to continue the practice indefinitely just to enjoy their voices again and again. A full ensemble of klezmer musicians, including brilliant clarinetist and mandolin player Andy Statman, had the entire house clapping and dancing in their seats. With their performance, the Shir Chadash singers contributed to the continuity of a rich 1,000 year-old legacy of Yiddish music and culture, one that was nearly extinguished by the Shoah but is still very much alive today.
