I guess my funniest real estate story goes as follows:
About 18 years ago one of my customers looking to purchase a home heard that a neighbor was considering selling and asked if would approach them on their behalf. I dressed up in a navy suit with a white shirt (El Al stewardess style) and went to knock at the “neighbor’s” door. An elderly couple greeted me with “Can we help you!” in an annoyed tone. “Excuse me for being presumptuous but is it possible that you would be interested in selling your home?” I asked.
“Do you have a card?” they asked. I took one out and the wife grabbed it from my hand and yelled, “Never come back here! I will put your card on our refrigerator to remind me never to call you!” They slammed the door in my face.
I went home, changed out of my suit and cried. I was mortified.
About a year later my office manager told me to pick up the phone as someone by the name of Steven was calling about his parents’ home. I said “Hello” and heard the following: “Nechama, both my parents passed away and in going through their things I found your card on their refrigerator. They must have meant to contact you.”
And so I sold the house!
