Nearly 50 Years Later, Michael Oren Provides an Answer

Your recent article by Michael Oren about Jimmy Carter awakened me to an event that took place at the Jewish Center in Elizabeth in 1976. In that election year, James Earl Carter (JEC) decided to make a foreign policy speech in front of Rabbi Teitz’s congregation. I was standing at the doorway when the peanut farmer from Georgia entered the room. I was rather awed in anticipation of what this candidate for president of the United States was about to say. Moreover I was also wondering how Rabbi Teitz was going to respond to Carter’s speech.

After Carter gave such a rousing speech about his commitment to Israel, it was with anticipation that I waited for Rabbi Teitz to conclude this historic encounter. Rabbi Teitz did not disappoint me with his prescient comment. Rabbi Teitz asserted that it remains to be seen how you will be judged when your goals are juxtaposed against your actions.

Michael Oren provided the answer.
