New Shiur Season at YI of Fair Lawn

Fair Lawn—The Young Israel of Fair Lawn (YIFL) has had the privilege to host and present many series of shiurim over the last several years. These weekly shiurim are given both on Shabbos as well as during the week and have been attended by members of all the surrounding shuls in Fair Lawn as well as by the greater Fair Lawn community. Rabbi Ian Shaffer will reprise his Navi Shiurim at YIFL, on Monday nights at 7:55 p.m. at the shul, located at 11-05 Saddle River Road.

For the last five years Rabbi Ian Shaffer, Professor of Jewish Studies at YU’s Stern College for Women, has been giving his stimulating Navi shiurim at the YIFL. His teaching of the Early Prophets of Shmuel, Melachim and Yehoshua was followed with shiurim on Megilat Ruth specifically timed before Shavuot. With the start of this year’s fall season, Rabbi Shaffer will present an in depth analysis of Megilat Esther.

Rabbi Shaffer’s shiurim have given men and women the opportunity to revisit the Nevi’im that many of us last learned in yeshiva decades ago. Rabbi Shaffer will share his analysis and excitement, as well as his enthusiasm and his wonderful recollections of learning in Yerushalayim with Nachama Leibowitz, a”h, and many other great scholars of Tanach. His review of the text often leads to reflections on contemporary events in Eretz Yisroel showing how history can and does repeat itself. His refreshing presentation is invaluable and has sparked requests to cover other Megilot and Sifrei Nach.

The shiurim are open to the public and are free of charge with the purpose of spreading Torah learning throughout Fair Lawn and the surrounding communities. Rabbi Shaffer’s shiurim are also available on the web at yutorah.org.

The YIFL is also proud to be part of the Torah Conferencing Network, a high-tech organization that provides the opportunity to present live simul-cast shiurim of world renown rabbis such as Rabbi Yissocher Frand on Thursday nights at 9 PM and Rabbi Yisroel Reisman on Motzei Shabbos. These shiurim take place on a weekly basis as does a Mishnayos Shiur before Shacharis every Shabbos and yom tov morning and a Shabbos afternoon Pirkei Avos shiur during the summer months. The YI provides the texts for the shiurim so all can appreciate and follow verse by verse. Please view the schedule included on the YI’s web site at www.YIFL.org.
