Newark’s University Hospital Finally Gets a Sukkah

(Courtesy of Newark University Hospital) One of the more popular posts on LinkedIn (over 450 likes!) on Sukkot was by a prominent non-Jewish healthcare CEO celebrating the arrival of a sukkah at a major hospital in Newark. Newark’s University Hospital President and CEO Shereef Elnahal announced on his personal LinkedIn page his delight that, for the first time, the hospital had erected a sukkah, and credited Dr. Nathan Zemel, an Orthodox rabbi and one of the hospital’s community chaplains, as being the catalyst for the addition. Zemel recalled that when he was earning his medical degree at UMDNJ (the hospital’s prior affiliation), Jewish students had great difficulty observing the holiday; he hoped to improve the situation for current Jewish students. Zemel worked with Elnahal to enlist observant students at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine to help put up the new sukkah in the parking lot outside University Hospital’s emergency room entrance.
