(NBN) On Monday, August 14, 233 North Americans will board an El Al Boeing 777 chartered by Nefesh B’Nefesh and immigrate to Israel together from JFK Airport. The flight is being facilitated in cooperation with Israel’s Ministry of Aliyah & Integration, Keren Kayemeth Le’Israel (KKL), The Jewish Agency for Israel, JNF-USA and Tzofim-Garin Tzabar.
The passengers include 68 young men and women who will volunteer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) after becoming Israeli citizens. They are moving as “lone soldiers,” a term for those who left their families abroad to move to Israel and volunteer for the army. There are currently 1,000 lone soldiers from the U.S. and 3,000 lone soldiers from around the world serving in the IDF.
The flight’s other passengers include a diverse mix of people from 19 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, including 21 families, 75 children, six sets of twins and 26 medical professionals.
A special departure ceremony for the new immigrants will take place at JFK prior to the flight, with notable guests to include: Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ambassador Dani Dayan; The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Director of the Aliyah, Absorption and Special Operations Unit, Yehuda Scharf; a representative of El Al; Chairman of the Israel Scouts, Eli Ben Yosef; and Nefesh B’Nefesh Co-Founders Rabbi Yehoshua Fass and Tony Gelbart.
