“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers—strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.” -Barbara Katz Rothman

What Is a Doula?

A doula is a trained non-medical professional who provides evidence-based information, non-judgmental support and resources prenatally and through the birth and postpartum period.

What Is a Birth Doula?

A birth doula is trained and experienced in childbirth. They get to know the expectant family and help them prepare for the birth. They assist in forming a birth plan which includes the family’s preferences surrounding the birth of their baby and the time immediately after. During the birth, a doula provides physical and emotional support. This includes preferences pertaining to the use of pain medication and comfort measures in labor. Immediately after birth, a doula helps with bonding, breastfeeding and processing of the birth experience. We are on call for you, arrive at your home, birth center or the hospital when you need us, and we remain with you continuously, until the baby is born. Our goal is to help you, as the mother, have a safe and satisfying birth as you define it. A doula helps the mother and family to become informed about various options, including the risks, benefits and accompanying precautions or interventions for safety.

The doula offers help such as breathing and relaxation, movement and positioning, and comforts the women with touch, hot or cold packs, beverages, warm baths, showers and other comforting gestures. Doulas can help maximize the benefits of pain medications while minimizing their undesirable side effects. The comfort and reassurance offered by the doula are beneficial regardless of the use of pain medications. We are trained and experienced in providing emotional and physical support, comfort measures and breastfeeding support.

What Is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula supports a family in their home after the baby is born. Once you are home, one of our trained postpartum doulas can be there to help you have a smooth transition, nurture your family and help you with the addition of your newborn. This includes lactation education, baby-care education, circumcision care, errands, meal preparation, sibling support and overall emotional support.

What Is a Premier Doula?

A Premier Doula is a doula who has been carefully selected by the team at Premier Doulas. A Premier Doula supports you whether you have a vaginal birth or caesarean, whether you choose pain medication or prefer a natural delivery, whether you bottle feed or breastfeed, whether this is your first baby or not. A Premier Doula provides you with information, education and resources and supports you in your preferences. A Premier Doula has a team of professionals to support them and a strong reputation in the community as well as an extensive resource list.

What About My Partner?

The woman’s partner (the baby’s father or another loved one) is essential in providing support for the woman. A doula cannot make some of the unique contributions that the partner makes, such as a long-term commitment, intimate knowledge of the woman and love for her and her child. The doula is there in addition to, not instead of, the partner. Ideally, the doula and the partner make the perfect support team for the woman, complementing each other!

With a doula present, the pressure on the partner is decreased and he or she can participate at his or her own comfort level. Partners often feel relieved when they can rely on a doula for help; they enjoy the experience more. For those partners who want to play a more active role, the doula assists and guides them in effective ways to help their loved ones in labor. Partners other than fathers (lovers, friends, family members) also appreciate the doula’s support, reassurance and assistance.
