President Obama Nominates S. Fitzgerald Haney as Ambassador to Costa Rica

After more than a year with­out an ambassador in Costa Rica, the White House recently named S. Fitzgerald Haney, an internation­al businessman with experience in marketing, financial services, and manufacturing in Latin America as its ambassador. Most recently, Haney was a principal and director of business development and cli­ent services for Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Pzena Investment Management in New York City. He has held the position since 2007.

Mr. Haney served as Senior Vice President of Ethnic Consumer Prod­ucts at International Discount Tele­communications (IDT). From 2002 to 2006 he served as Director of Strategic Planning/New Business at Depository Trust & Clearing Cor­poration. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Haney was a Senior Associate at Is­rael Seed Partners in Jerusalem, Is­rael. He previously served as an appointed Member of the City of Englewood Planning Board and Board of Adjustment in Englewood, New Jersey.

The nominee was born in Nash­ville, Tennessee, and grew up out­side Chicago in Naperville, Illinois. Fitzgerald and Andrea Haney live in Englewood with their four children. Haney is a convert to Orthodox Ju­daism and has been active in Engle­wood’s Modern Orthodox commu­nity. He and his family are members of the Kesher Synagogue.

Fitzgerald Haney earned a Bachelor of Science in internation­al economics and a Master of Sci­ence from the Georgetown Uni­versity School of Foreign Service in international business and diplo­macy. Haney has worked in Mexico, Brazil, Israel, and Puerto Rico dur­ing his career, among other plac­es. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Hebrew and is conversant in French.
