Rabbi Dr. Gil Perl, Rabbi Tully Harcsztark On Post-Modern ‘Orthodoxy’

(Courtesy of CCE) Rabbi Dr. Gil Perl, the head of school at Kohelet Yeshiva in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Rabbi Tully Harcsztark, the founding principal of SAR High School in Riverdale, New York, will highlight an online panel discussion sponsored by the Center for Community Education (CCE) at the Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy of Connecticut on Tuesday evening, December 1, at 8 p.m.

The subject of the panel discussion will be “Modern Orthodoxy in a Post-Modern World.” Both of these Jewish educators have written and spoken extensively on the subject, but this is the first time that they will be brought together in the same program to discuss the issue.

“We are very fortunate to host Rabbi Dr. Perl and Rabbi Harcsztark for this program, which will be featuring two of the brightest minds in the Jewish education field today,” said Michael Feldstein, the co-chair of the CCE. “They both have strong opinions on what the future holds for Modern Orthodoxy, and this forum will give both of them an opportunity to present their thoughts to a wide audience.”

Rabbi Perl has been the head of school at Kohelet Yeshiva since 2014. He served for seven years as the dean of the Margolin Hebrew Academy/Feinstone Yeshiva of the South in Memphis. Prior to that, Rabbi Perl served as an instructor of modern Jewish history at Yeshiva University and as the associate head of school at Yeshiva University’s High School for Boys.

Rabbi Perl earned his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, his master’s and Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages and civilizations from Harvard University and rabbinical ordination from Yeshiva University. As a teaching fellow at Harvard, Rabbi Perl was twice awarded Harvard’s prestigious Certificate of Distinction in Teaching, and in the spring of 2006, he was named Yeshiva University’s Lillian F. and William L. Silber Professor of the Year.

Rabbi Harcsztark is the founding principal of SAR High School, and leads Machon Siach, a research institute that helps to develop teachers into thought leaders in the Modern Orthodox community. He received his B.A. from Yeshiva College, his rabbinical ordination from Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and a master’s in Jewish history from Bernard Revel Graduate School. He previously served as rabbi of Congregation Keter Torah in Teaneck and as the associate principal of Judaic studies at SAR Academy for nine years. In 2017, Rabbi Harcsztark was a recipient of the Covenant Foundation Award for excellence in education.

The Center for Community Education is a new initiative of the Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy of Connecticut that aims to inspire thoughtful conversation related to the spectrum of Jewish issues.
