The middle school language arts students in Mrs. Weiss’ classes have been presenting dynamic and creative Book Talks to one another. Book Talks are a contemporary version of the classic book report, a “pitch” of sorts, that encourages peers to read their selected book. Each Book Talk consists of an opening hook, a spoiler-free summary, the student’s impression of the book and a catchy closing. Book Talks channel the student’s authentic voice, thoughts and creativity, and even include a captivating visual aid to help reel classmates into their book’s world. The Book Talks have been a huge hit, and students are already eager to pick up books with friends’ encouragement for the upcoming round of independent reading.
