During the week of Parshat Vayera, SAR students visited Ohel Avraham v’Sarah, a tent modeled after that of Avraham and Sarah. In the chesed tent, students performed hands-on acts of chesed while learning about a charitable organization and engaging in hands-on activities to support its mission. The students participated in a variety of grade-specific activities and projects throughout the week:
2N made cards for Meals on Wheels; 3N decorated tzedaka boxes to collect money for The Riverdale Fund for the Needy; 4N made Chanukah cards for Adi B’Chinuch; Kindergarten donated books and decorated bags/bookmarks for 914cares; First grade packed Shabbat Bags for KCI Food Pantry; Second grade packed socks (and treats) for U.S. soldiers for the Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute (MSAWI); Third grade made build-a-bears for The Elie Ruby Foundation; Fourth grade packaged cereal/snacks for the kosher rooms in hospitals—fully stocked by Chesed 24/7; Fifth grade made Cozy Cups, which included packets of hot cocoa, tea, oatmeal and candies for the Bronx Jewish Community Council; Sixth grade created pillows for Knock Knock, Give A Sock; Seventh grade packaged pink floral bouquets for Sharsheret; and eighth grade put together Cholent Bags, which were sold to raise money for Tomchei Shabbos of Queens.
Parent volunteers helped make this a meaningful experience for the SAR students and an impactful experience for many important causes.
