On Thursday, January 18, Dr. Judith Ballan, accompanied her AP European history class to hear world-renowned historian Niall Ferguson speak at the New-York Historical Society. Dr. Ferguson was there to discuss his new book, “The Square and the Tower,” which discusses eras of world history, such as the one we are currently living through, where people suddenly have new networks of communication. In this work, Ferguson proposes an entirely new way of analyzing historical change. The students prepared questions for Dr. Ferguson and spent several minutes talking with him after his talk. At the impromptu photo op with him, he expressed his delight in seeing young people taking an interest in history. The students had become familiar with Ferguson’s scholarship in their AP Euro class. The trip was inspiring and the students hope to find other opportunities to interact with the academics and scholars whose works they study.
