Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Save Lives at the Intersection Of Jefferson/Somerset and West Englewood Avenue

We’ve all been shocked by the two incidents in December of pedestrians being hit by cars in this intersection, one fatally. My husband came up with a suggestion that should be easy to implement and hopefully help avoid further accidents.

Considering that Congregation Bnai Yeshurun is in constant use during the week, between the many minyanim each morning and afternoon/evening, the Nitzanei Noam Nursery School and the active beit midrash and classes, there is a steady flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at that intersection throughout the week, as well as very heavy pedestrian traffic on Shabbat and holidays. Perhaps if four stop signs were put up, one on each of those corners, it would prevent cars from speeding past and allow pedestrians safer crosswalks to walk in. When there is not a lot of traffic, it would just be a short pause for the drivers in their trip. When there are people coming to and from the synagogue, it could be just what is needed to prevent another tragedy.
