Second Grade Boys Join Ranks With Israeli Soldier

On Wednesday, May 20, the second grade boys of RYNJ had the opportunity to interview Tzvi Wiesel, a soldier in the Israeli army, as part of their Yom Yerushalayim and Memorial Day studies. What made this soldier-encounter extra special, is that Tzvi is a graduate of RYNJ.

The boys enthusiastically welcomed Tzvi and launched into a barrage of questions. They learned many interesting facts about the Israeli army. They were surprised to find out that it takes a while to become a soldier and that soldiers participate in rigorous training. For example, a soldier needs to be able to carry very heavy equipment, and run and walk 60 miles. Soldiers also learn how to use various types of equipment and drive different vehicles.

Tzvi was asked how he would describe his unit. His reply was that “We are a family. The guys in your unit become like your brothers.” The boys’ eyes widened.

The second grade students will now compare and contrast the facts they learned about the Israeli army to the facts they are learning about the American army.
