Our community has its concern focused on the ever-growing number of Jewish Community Centers and Jewish schools that have received harrowing, chilling bomb threats since the beginning of 2017, including those in our readership area. We have also witnessed unthinkable cruelty in seeing hundreds of tombstones toppled in Jewish cemeteries in St. Louis and Philadelphia.
These are horrible spikes in anti-Semitism. On his website this week, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks reminded us not to forget this ongoing diatribe of untruths, “fake news” and other forms of hatred toward Jews, including those marking Israel “Apartheid” Week next week.
“The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel is dangerously wrong, because beneath the surface it is an attempt to delegitimize Israel as a prelude to its elimination,” he writes.
We hope and we pray that the bomb scares will immediately cease, and that the authorities will bring to justice those who are practicing nothing less than domestic terrorism, wherever they are hiding. Those who topple Jewish tombstones on a cemetery’s hallowed ground should also face the justice they deserve.
And while these challenges are addressed, let’s continue to work with government leaders, campus administrators, classroom teachers and even families to help ensure that the ugly monster of BDS disappears into the abyss of the illegitimacy it represents.
