When the Syrians condemn another nation at the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), it’s time to take a look at the value of the UNHRC.

To think that the same Syrians who attacked their own people with chemical weapons and have seen hundreds of thousands perish in a civil war can serve as honest evaluators of UNHRC’s values is a sick joke on the world.

Remember, it was Syrian Ambassador Hussam Edin Aala, the brother of his nation’s brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad, who called out Israel for its “occupation.”

Sadly, we believe that most UNHRC members support the Syrian ambassador. Why should we believe otherwise when earlier this week the council met to once again, as it always does, single out Israel under “Agenda Item 7”? This “item” calls for a discussion of Israeli “human rights abuses against Palestinians” as a mandatory part of each one of these council sessions.

Again, this is brought to you by societies that give pensions to the families of terrorists who have killed or maimed Jews. This comes to you from societies where sexually assaulted women are killed for bringing “dishonor” to their families while their male assailant goes free. And of course, this comes to the U.N. with the sponsorship once again of those who would like to see Israel extinct.

Still, there is some room for optimism. The Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) reported this week that Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, an independent human rights group, is saying that more and more Western democracies are emerging to vote against the singling out of Israel. Nations such as Britain, Hungary, Brazil, Japan and Ukraine have in recent months voted no against Agenda Item 7 proposals.

These are small steps when one considers there are 56 Muslim nations voting as a bloc in the U.N. Never would any consider a resolution condemning Hamas rocket fire on Israel.

However, the work of UN Watch, which monitors the votes of nations for and against Israel, has at least clarified for those who need such clarification that the Jewish state has overwhelmingly been singled out because it is indeed Jewish.

It is our hope that with a new turn toward regional economic and strategic cooperation in the Middle East between Israel and Sunni Arab nations, perhaps we will see Muslim countries bravely do the right thing in the future.

And vote against Agenda Item 7.
