Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

The MTA junior varsity softball team continued their season with games against Hillel, Maor, Frisch and JEC. In the first game of a doubleheader, the Lions lost to Hillel. In the second game, played against Maor, the Lions fell behind 9-2 before the fifth inning. Impressively, they rallied to score 8 runs and take a 10-9 lead. Unfortunately, Maor scored two more runs in the sixth inning and won 11-10.

The following day, the Lions were hungry for victory and took on Frisch. Frisch started off strong with 4 runs in the first inning. MTA came up to bat in the bottom of the inning and cut the lead in half. Later in the game, one of the Frisch batters hit the ball into deep right-center field but Coby Sorotzkin ran it down and made an incredible catch. After another MTA run, Chaim Weinstein came to the plate in the bottom of the 4th with bases loaded and 1 out. He smacked the ball to deep right-center field for a grand slam; this put MTA up 7-4. Going into the bottom of the last inning, the score was tied at 9 and MTA came up to bat hoping for that one run they needed to win. Zachary Gurwitz led the inning off with a single. After two more hits by Coby Sorotzkin and Gabe Isaacs, MTA had the bases loaded with only one out. Zeve Kornwasser then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the winning run. MTA won 10-9.

In their next match, the Lions played against JEC. MTA, as the away team, started off the game scoring 5 runs in the first inning, one of which was on a solo home run by Daniel Landa. It only took JEC two innings to catch up and take the lead, but MTA regained the lead in the fourth inning and never looked back. The MTA bats were on fire, scoring 12 runs in total to beat JEC 12-8.

Eitan Warburg played an incredible shortstop throughout the contests and Meir Uretsky, MTA’s starting pitcher, ended the week with a strikeout to complete the game against JEC.

The JV softball team has one more game against SAR and are hoping to get both a win and a spot in the playoffs.
