Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County (SSDS) to Honor Community Leaders

The Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County (SSDS) will honor outstanding champions of Jewish education at its 42nd annual community celebration to be held on Sunday, April 3, at the Hilton Pearl River. The event begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the evening support Schechter’s cutting-edge curriculum and tuition assistance for students in need.

Honorees Shlomit and Gil Makleff, Elana and Ray Goldberg, and Roslyn Gottlieb all embody Schechter’s mission of educating children to be independent thinkers and compassionate adults who will contribute to the Jewish and greater global communities. Longtime Schechter parents, Shlomit and Gil Makleff are dedicated to building a strong Schechter community. A graduate of the prestigious Berrie Fellows Leadership Program, Gil has served on the school’s board for over 10 years, and is completing his second year as board president. The Makleffs are active members of Temple Emanu-El in Closter. Shlomit and Gil are the proud parents of Matan (‘04), who is currently serving in the IDF, and Keren, a current 8th grade student.

Elana and Ray Goldberg are active alumni parents at Schechter. Ray serves as secretary of the board, and Elana is involved in alumni outreach. Both are leaders in Congregation Beth Sholom, in Teaneck, and are deeply involved with other charitable organizations. Ray was a member of the first graduating class of the Schechter School of Long Island. They are the proud parents of Leor, Ayal, Allon, Noam and Eitan, all of whom attended SSDS.

In her 36 years at Schechter, Roz Gottlieb has taught nearly every subject except 7th and 8th grade science. In the past several years, she has found her home in middle school social studies where she has taught hundreds of children history, and its relevance in our world today. Roz is married to her wonderful husband Sid, and they are the proud parents of Matthew, Steven, Beth and Amy, and grandparents of Eliana, Zachary, Gabriella, Lexi and Jeremy.

The evening will be chaired by Adina Avery Grossman and Harman Grossman, Jackie and Erno Grunstein, and Sarah and David Nanus. Tickets for the evening are $180 per person. Alumni and under-30 discounts are available. Tickets can be purchased online at ssdsbergen.ejoinme.org/celebration.
