Solomon Schechter Day School Students Garner National Documentary Awards

Ilan Barnea and Samuel Modlinger, seventh graders at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County, earned an honorable mention in C-SPAN’s national 2017 StudentCam documentary competition for their video, “Terrorism: Civil Liberties and Security in a Changing World.” Both boys were among the 97 students nationally who received an honorable mention for their work. This is the fourth consecutive year SSDS Middle School students have earned honorable mentions or better in the competition. Each year since 2006, C-SPAN has partnered with local cable affiliates in communities nationwide to invite middle school and high school students to produce short documentaries on an issue of national importance. This year, students answered the question, “Your message to Washington: What is the most urgent issue for the new president and Congress to address in 2017?” SSDS students’ work was recognized among a record 2,903 video submissions from more than 5,600 students in 46 states and Washington, D.C., England, Germany, Singapore and Taiwan.
