Spotlight on Teaneck/Bergenfield/New Milford Gemachs

Join us in learning more about the many gemachs available to the communities surrounding us.

How did these organizations get started?

The gemachs are a compilation of different groups (many of which are listed in the gemach directory) that are happy to help people in the community save funds that can be used for others needs or donated to charity.

Please describe the services your organization provides?

The word gemach is an acronym for the Jewish term gemilut chasidim (acts of lovingkindness). A gemach is a Jewish recycling agency of sorts, a repository of useful items that people may borrow and then keep or return.

Who is eligible for your services?

While gemachs can have the misunderstanding of only being for those in need, we are trying to change this mistaken feeling within our community. Anyone who can use the service is eligible and can then use the money they save for other needs or return it to the community in other forms, such as donations of items, time or charity.

Are your services anonymous?

If the person requests them to be.

Please share an anecdote that highlights the importance of your work.

Muhammad Ali once said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” The same way you would not expect to live somewhere without paying rent/mortgage, one should not expect to live in a community without giving back.

What volunteer opportunities, if any, can community members sign up for?

Our long term dream is to organize a central location for all the local gemachs that would want to join. This way one could go to a location for everything they need and would not have to wonder who to call. Anyone who shares our enthusiasm for this idea is welcome to contact us.
