Spring for Kids Fashion on a Budget

Bergenfield—Pink and purple lovers rejoice. After extensive polling and research, Pantone (a international firm based in Carlstadt, NJ which specializes in color, décor, and swatches) named radiant orchid the “it” color of 2014. A blend of pink and purple, it is a bright, fun color, and has been seen in everything from dresses, shirts and skirts, to purses, jewelry and other accessories. While this may at first seem to be a color geared toward women, it can also be used as a bold accent in men’s fashion.

If pinkish-purplish hues are not a family favorite, the spring lineup features many other colors in bold, strong accents. This season also takes fashion forward and breaks rules previously considered “fashion don’ts.” Mixing prints with bold graphics are popping up everywhere, and Target even featured designer Peter Pilotto, known for his striking floral patterns. Anyone interested in snagging affordable designer duds should hurry over to Target as they are already discounting these chic fashions to make room for new merchandise. Even pastels, a perennial spring favorite are mixed in with brighter colors this season.

According to Rachel Riss, a stylist from Los Angeles who features modest couture on Instagram under the handle @The_Coverist, Birkenstocks are making a comeback this spring and summer—but with a twist. “All the major designers were showcasing the Birkenstock style sandals with embellishments,” said Riss.

For boys looking to embrace their inner newsie, newsboy caps make the perfect accessory this spring, especially when paired with a vest and print shirt. If the occasion calls for dressy footwear, boat shoes or canvas slip-ons are the way to go. Riss adds that, “A cool pair of kids aviators complete any look for a boy.”

Dassie Fuchs, owner of Dassie’s Deals based in Bergenfield, sells discounted designer fashion for kids. “Look out for bright colored shorts for boys,” Fuchs says. “Colors aren’t just for girls anymore.” Girls can also be bold with fashion as max- dresses and hi-low skirts feature the same bright graphic and floral patterns. “Spring and summer florals and stripes are all the rage for girls,” said Fuchs.

Riss adds advice for pairing prints: “The same rules that apply to moms apply to tots as well. When mixing prints, keep the patterns in the same color family or opt for similar styles, but play around with the size of the print.” Expanding our fashion savvy yet again, she adds, “Remember, polka dots and stripes are the new neutral. They practically go with everything!”

Wardrobe basics are always available at the moderately priced Teaneck-based Carly’z Craze. They feature fashion essentials, such as shells, solid colored skirts in uniform colors, a variety of accessories, (featuring headbands by Perfectly Purple), and many more novelty apparel items.
