Survivors and Survival, Teaneck Commemoration

Teaneck—The Jewish Community Council of Teaneck invites the community to be part of Survivors and Survival, a special observance of Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Memorial Day, on Monday, April 28, 2014 at Teaneck High School. A pre-event reception honoring the survivors in our community will be held marking the 75th anniversary of the start of the Shoah. To get your family names into the Memorial Book, donations and names need to be submitted by March 10.

The program’s featured speaker will be Irving Roth, who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald at age 15, and has been an activist and speaker for decades. He and his son, Rabbi Dr. Edward S. Roth, co-authored and published Bondi’s Brother, a book about his experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust. Mr. Roth earned the Spirit of Anne Frank Outstanding Citizen Award from the Anne Frank Center USA for promoting human rights and for initiating the Adopt-a-Survivor program, instituted nationally and internationally in public and parochial high schools and colleges in the effort to fight “Holocaust Amnesia.”

This year’s musical segment will be performed by the Yavneh Choirs under the direction of Yavneh music director Marsha Greenberg Motzen. The Junior Chorus and Middle School Concert Choir of Yavneh will be participating in this event. Composer Steve Cohen has been commissioned to arrange the “Partisan Song” especially for this occasion. The “Partisan Song” will be sung in Yiddish and English to highlight its meaning to everyone in the room. Rabbis Chaim Jachter of Shaarei Orah and Rabbi Yosef Adler of Rinat Yisrael will also participate in this year’s program.

The Holocaust Commemoration Committee of the Jewish Community Council of Teaneck plans this event as a tribute to all the Holocaust survivors in our community. An annual commemoration, the increased costs of the event have forced the Council to appeal to the community to support its efforts financially by making a contribution to the Jewish Community Council of Greater Teaneck. Checks should be mailed to Sharon Penkower Kaplan, 534 South Forest Drive, Teaneck, NJ 07666. For other ways to donate, please contact Blanche Hampel at [email protected], Steve Fox at [email protected] or Yetta Marchuck at [email protected].

The event will take place on Monday, April 28, 2014, 7:30 p.m. at the Teaneck High School Auditorium located on Cranford Place off Queen Anne Road. (This facility is handicapped accessible.) For more information, visit www.teaneckyomhashoa.org.
