Seniors at TABC got a head start on their civic entry into the electoral process by participating in a voter registration drive in conjunction with Teach NJ. The program commenced with an overview of the historical evolution of voting rights in the United States from property ownership qualifications to universal white male suffrage to the incremental inclusion of other sectors of society. This progression culminated with the gains made during the 20th century Civil Rights movement. Students explored the importance of voting as a means to exercise their civic privilege and ability to exude influence on local, state and national affairs. In addition, the seniors learned about New Jersey State government and the respective offices holding elections this year, as well as more basic information relating how to file an absentee ballot and vote while in Israel during their upcoming gap year. The highlight, of course, was when the seniors registered to vote, marking a special milestone as future influencers in civic society as they formulate educated opinions about critical topics that will shape their lives!
