Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week: Ester Avidan

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse would like to recognize 17 -year-old Ester Avidan as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. A recent graduate of the Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls, Ester is coming off of an amazing tenure with the Rapids soccer team. Coach Marc Zharnest told the JLNJ, “I’ve been lucky enough to have Ester for the least four years, she truly is a once in four year talent, from her shot, to her motivation, to her work ethic I can safely say there are no two Ester Avidans. This girl has a soccer future, whether coaching or playing, and I look forward to watching and can take some solace in knowing I was able to be along for some of the ride.”

  1. Ester, congratulations on your recent graduation. Who are your role models?

My parents because they always believed in my potential as an athlete, despite what anyone else thought I was capable of accomplishing. I admire and look up to them for that, because without having the support system that I did, I would have never accomplished the things I did nor became the player I became.

  • What is your favorite sport?

Soccer has always been a part of me. I grew up playing and my family was always very involved and passionate about it, so it has always been the sport I felt most connected to. However, throughout high school I’ve definitely gained an appreciation for the many other sports I’ve played, specifically hockey.

  • What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment is definitely the record breaking stats my team (varsity soccer) has put up over the last four years in Ma’ayanot—we have not lost a home game since 2015, have had 30+ wins consecutively, an overall four year record of 41-3, and three championship wins (as well four straight championship appearances).

  • Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Carli Lloyd because despite all the adversity she has faced throughout her career, she has fought to overcome it, making herself known as one of the best women’s soccer players to ever play the game.

  1. What is your pregame routine?

My pregame routine is I listen to music, stretch, go on a seven minute jog and drink a bottle of water (I also daven Mincha before most games).

  • What is your earliest sport memory?

My earliest sports memory was scoring my first goal when I was eight; it was my first year of soccer and really motivated me to work harder.

  • What is your weirdest sports memory?

My weirdest sports memory was in soccer camp when a boy kicked my earring out instead of the ball. To be fair I shouldn’t have been wearing earrings.

  • What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory was winning the varsity soccer championship this year. It was an incredible way to finish off four amazing years with my team.

  • What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

When I’m not playing sports, I love to go to watch my siblings’ and friends’ games. I really enjoy being in a competitive environment, so I hope to coach in the near future.

  • What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

It’s a really awesome and special opportunity to hear about/share each other’s experiences!
