Can the editors please clarify if the piece by Elizabeth Kratz, “Teaneck Council Ousts Members From Zoning And Planning Boards” (June 22, 2023), was a feature that follows journalistic professionalism or an editorial? Kratz presents one side of the story and pushes an opinion that seems to speak for the publishers and editors: that the current council is anti-Orthodox Jews. Her “article” did not give the whole picture.
First off, “ousted” implies removed and the board members have expired terms and are not being reappointed. That is not the same as being ousted. Second, there are still several Orthodox Jews on the Planning and Zoning Boards but Kratz fails to mention that. She gives the impression that there is now zero representation from Orthodox Jews. Third, she only provides quotes from Zomick outright saying in his own words that there is a targeting of Orthodox Jews and an anti-Orthodox agenda and that the new council members are being divisive. Although the article noted that Pagan did not comment, one can only assume (again by omission) that the deputy mayor or other council members were not sent requests since it was not stated in the article.
The readers of the Jewish Link deserve to be presented with the facts so they can form their own opinions. Otherwise use your editorial column to present the opinions of your editors, not the featured article.
