The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Alex Magence

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize 13 year old Alex Magence as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Alex is an eighth grader at the Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy (SAR) and a key member of the Hustle & Heart 3 vs 3 champion team. When asked about Alex, Hustle & Heart Director Shana Steinmetz told The Jewish Link, “Alex Magence is a fierce competitor on both sides of the court. She has been competing in numerous Hustle & Heart competitions. This past summer she won the 3 vs 3 league in camp, and was a fierce competitor in the 3 vs 3 Hustle & Heart/Bergen Broncos league. When we weren’t able to play because of Covid, she competed in the Zoom foul shooting and 5-3-1 leagues and just came short at taking those titles. Alex keeps on improving and looking forward to seeing her grow.” Alex’s former teammate Tamar Feldman added, “As a teammate on both Alex’s soccer and basketball teams you really see that she hustles for the ball and is a great team player.”

Alex, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My role models are my parents. They have each taught me never to quit and never stop doing things that I love.

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball. I have been playing basketball for a very long time and love seeing how I have progressed throughout the years. I have also made so many different friends from all the different leagues I have played in.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Winning four soccer championships four years in a row.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Charles Barkley, because he became one of the greatest players by hard work with both hustle and heart.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Going to my first St. Louis cardinals game.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My dad shooting “hoops” with me on my Little Tikes basketball hoop.

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you while playing ball?

When I was younger, I was playing basketball and got the rebound and I dribbled to the wrong hoop and shot—luckily, I missed.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Hanging out with my friends.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Knowing that I am part of multiple teams and that I make a difference on each team I play on.
