The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Sammy Mohl as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Sammy is an eighth grader at Yavneh Academy and one of the main cogs on the Yavneh Redhawks eighth grade basketball team—one of the top teams in the YMSSA. In a recent game, Mohl put on a show scoring almost half of the Redhawks’ points when they defeated the Noam Knights 40-27. When asked about Mohl, Yavneh’s coach Ushie Selevan told The Jewish Link, “Sammy’s calm demeanor on and off of the court, coupled with his basketball skills make him a natural leader for the Yavneh Redhawks.”
Sammy, congrats on a great start to the season and for being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Who are your role models and why?
My parents; They taught me the importance of being a team player.
What is your favorite sport?
Basketball. I’ve always loved basketball because it’s entertaining to watch and play.
What is your pregame routine?
Listen to music and shoot around.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Finally being able to play on my school team after two years of Covid.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Immanuel Quickley. He was drafted very late in the draft and is one of the best out of the draft class. He always plays his heart out.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory is going to my siblings’ soccer games and whenever the ball went out of bounds I would chase after the ball so I could dribble it.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
I once had a soccer game in the hail, it was a crazy and fun game.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Hangout with friends and family, and listen to music.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Sharing a love for the game with friends and family.
