The Gotham Burger Sportstar of the Week: Josh Dukas

Josh Dukas going up for a shot

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize seventeen year old Josh Dukas as this week’s sportstar of the week. The Frisch senior lit up the Hillel Heat this past Sunday. Dukas scored 45 points—including nine three-pointers, missing only four shots the entire game.

Wow, Josh, that was quite a performance. Who would you say is your role model and why?

My role model is my rebbe, Rabbi Morris. We learn together every day and he always puts a smile on my face. He always pushes me to do the right thing.

Who is your favorite pro athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Omri Casspi. As the only Israeli basketball player in the NBA, he makes such a great Kiddush HaShem when he plays well and he represents Israel proudly.

What is your pregame routine, if you have one?

I don’t really have a specific routine. I like to eat a nice hearty meal and then get on the court before the game and chuck up shots. The more I see the ball go in the hoop before the game, the more confident I feel.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is watching the Jets lose to the Steelers in the 2004 playoffs. I cried myself to sleep that night.

What is your funniest sports memory?

In a recent game my teammate and close friend got a steal and had a wide open fastbreak layup. Unfortunately, he never made it all the way to the basket as he wiped out and lost the ball before he could even get over half court! The funniest part about it was when he stood up afterwards and yelled “Shaqtin a fool!” which is a segment on NBATV where Shaq goes over the funniest bloopers of the week in the NBA.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Last year, we upset Heschel, the number two seed, in the Sarachek tournament. I hit a big three with less than a minute left to help seal the game. The whole crowd was gowing crazy and I got so much attention afterwards.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

I love to just relax, hang out with friends and watch sports on TV.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

I love the recognition I’m getting from my friends. Although the yeshiva sports world is not so big, I feel like a celebrity.

The Gotham Burger Sportstar of the Week will receive a $10 gift certificate to Gotham Burger. Please send nominees for upcoming Gotham Burger Sportstars of the Week to [email protected].
